Adult ADHD Assessment

What an Adult ADHD Assessment Is?

Adult ADHD assessments involve a structured clinical evaluation that explores whether long-standing patterns of attention, organization, impulsivity, or emotional regulation are consistent with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder—or whether another explanation may better account for current concerns.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that begins in childhood and can persist into adulthood. In adults, it often presents differently than in children and may overlap with, or be influenced by, factors such as anxiety, mood disorders, trauma history, sleep issues, learning differences, medical conditions, or chronic stress.
For this reason, an assessment is not a single test, and it is not something you pass or fail. In some cases, the outcome may be that ADHD is not the most accurate explanation. When that occurs, the focus shifts to identifying more appropriate next steps rather than forcing a diagnosis.

What Makes This Assessment Different

Comprehensive Assessment with Lead NP

Assessments are conducted by Mark Lynch, MN-PHCNP, FNP, MSc, a Nurse Practitioner with over a decade of experience across primary care, psychiatry, ADHD management, and virtual care.

Accessible and Affordable

Whereas many ADHD assessment centres involve long wait periods and extensive fees, we’ve done everything we can to ensure quick appointment times (up to same day) at rates matching the most affordable in the province. Currently Only $299.

Emphasis on Differential Diagnosis Exploration

Many conditions can resemble or overlap with ADHD, including anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep disorders, learning differences, and medical conditions. The assessment process explicitly considers these possibilities to ensure conclusions are based on the full clinical picture.

**When ADHD is not identified as the primary diagnosis, individuals may still receive guidance, recommendations, and support for addressing contributing factors and next steps.

Neurodiversity-Affirming and Trauma-Informed

The approach is collaborative, respectful, and non-judgmental, recognizing that cognitive differences exist on a spectrum and that lived experience matters.

More Than A Symptom Checklist Evaluation

Validated clinical screening tools may be used where appropriate, but they are never used in isolation. Equal weight is given to history, context, functional impact, and clinical judgment.

What the Assessment Involves

Each assessment is individualized, but the process typically includes the following components:

Comprehensive Intake

Prior to the appointment, you will complete a detailed intake form covering developmental history, education, work functioning, mental health, medical history, and current concerns. This allows for a more focused and meaningful clinical conversation.

Clinical Screening Tools

Validated screening or rating scales may be used where appropriate to support clinical reasoning. These tools inform—but do not determine—diagnostic conclusions.

In-Depth Diagnostic Interview

A comprehensive 60-90 minute clinical interview explores:

Lab Investigations (Where Appropriate)

In some cases, laboratory testing or other diagnostic investigations may be recommended to rule out medical contributors to symptoms, such as sleep, hormonal, or metabolic concerns. These are considered based on clinical judgment and individual presentation.

Timeframe and Structure

Assessments may occur over one or more virtual appointments, depending on clinical complexity. Adequate time is reserved to ensure the process is thorough and un-rushed. We want to ensure you feel heard and that we fully understand your experience to ensure our interventions are tailored to your exact needs.

What Happens After the Assessment

Following completion of the assessment:
If ADHD is not diagnosed, individuals may still receive guidance regarding other conditions identified and support with appropriate treatment planning, referrals, or care coordination.
Not all assessments result in an ADHD diagnosis, and medication is neither automatic nor always recommended.

Who This Service Is Not For

This service may not be appropriate if you are:

Seeking a guaranteed ADHD diagnosis or specific medication
Looking for a brief screening without a comprehensive clinical evaluation
Requiring urgent or crisis mental health care
Under the age of 18
This assessment process tends to be a good fit for individuals who value reflection, open discussion, and a collaborative clinical relationship. It may feel less suitable for those seeking immediate conclusions without exploration.

Booking & Next Steps

If you decide to proceed, booking an appointment allows for a structured, confidential conversation focused on understanding—not assumptions or predetermined outcomes.
You are encouraged to approach this process as an informed clinical decision, taken at your own pace. Secure virtual care is available to adults located in Ontario and is delivered in accordance with provincial regulatory standards.

Adult ADHD Assessment – Frequently Asked Questions

No. An assessment is a clinical evaluation, not a guarantee of diagnosis. Some individuals meet criteria for ADHD, while others find that different factors better explain their experiences. The goal is accuracy and clarity, not a predetermined outcome.

Yes. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that begins in childhood, but many adults are not assessed until later in life. An adult assessment looks carefully at developmental history, current functioning, and supporting clinical evidence.

Medication is not automatic. Treatment options are discussed only if clinically appropriate and based on assessment findings. Many individuals benefit from non-pharmacologic strategies, education, or therapy, either alone or alongside medication.

If ADHD is not diagnosed, you will still receive clinical feedback and guidance. Where appropriate, this may include discussion of other conditions, recommendations for next steps, referrals, or coordinated care planning to address identified concerns.

Validated screening tools may be used where appropriate, but they are only one part of the assessment. Diagnosis is based on a comprehensive clinical interview, history, and professional judgment—not on scores alone.

In some cases, laboratory testing or other investigations may be recommended to rule out medical contributors to symptoms. This is determined on an individual basis and discussed during the assessment.

Coverage varies. Nurse Practitioner services may be covered by some extended health insurance plans, but are not universally covered by OHIP. You are encouraged to check with your insurer regarding reimbursement.

Yes. When conducted by a regulated healthcare provider using secure, compliant platforms, virtual assessment is an accepted and evidence-based approach for adult ADHD evaluation in Ontario.
